The Warsaw Institute Review has the honor to announce the upcoming expert debate „Belarus. Between Moscow and NATO’s Eastern Flank” on Wednesday, on May 13 at 20:00 (CET)!

Belarus, which has been ruled for 26 years by President Lukashenko, is in a state of contracting the influence of dominant geopolitical entities – Russia and NATO. Russia is trying at all costs to limit its western neighbor’s contacts with the European Union. However, Belarus- or rather Lukashenka, is efficiently maneuvering from friendship with President Putin to winking at European countries, especially its neighbors.

There is no doubt that Belarus’s cultural heritage links this country with the heritage of Western civilization and common statehood with the Polish state. Nevertheless, the communist period caused a strong bond between Belarus and Russia, which has not been changed by the Belarusian decision-maker so far.

The meeting aims to present and discuss the experts’ outlook regarding events taking place in Belarus. During the debate, we would like to raise the subject of the Belarusian strategic position in Europe, its current relations with Russia, as well as energy switch related to the possibility of Polish and Baltic state’s future cooperation with Belarus.

Our experts:

Mr. Ambassador Gheorghe Magheru – former General Director at the office of the Romanian Minister for Foreign Affairs, member of Scientific Council at the New Strategy Center

Mr. Olevs Nikers – President of Baltic Security Foundation, Director of Baltic Sea Security Initiative at The Jamestown Foundation
