40th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreement and the birth of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity”

On that day, 40 years ago, the so-called August Agreement was signed between the democratic opposition and the communist government. On August 31, 1980, after long strikes and negotiations, the authorities accepted 21 Gdańsk postulates. All opposition activists were then released.

It was the first step to political changes in Central and Eastern Europe – this document became the beginning of the 10-million-strong “Solidarity” movement, whose activities contributed to the fall of communism and the creation of democratic movements in the countries of the Eastern Bloc.
