Supporters of the Baltic Fund project

The core aim of the Baltic Fund, a new international institution, would be to intensify cooperation between Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland as well as Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, albeit in the long-term perspective. The new institution is modeled on the International Visegrad Fund while taking advantage of both its experience and mechanisms. In line with its main premises, the Baltic Fund seeks to support any worthy initiatives in areas like security, economy, energy, and civil society. The following project comes as a response to the region’s current geopolitical situation while being poised to become the framework for more far-reaching cooperation under a new political format.

In 2019, the Warsaw Institute coupled with think tanks in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia by coming up with an idea to set up an international project and provide adequate expertise while taking into account the region’s specific preconditions. In February 2020, we submitted the effects of our joint work to state officials, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Foreign Ministers, both in Poland and the Baltic States. Nonetheless, with the coronavirus pandemic, we shall give new momentum to our project while making senior officials more aware of it.

Along with our partners in the Baltic States, we made efforts to form a wide group of those being in favor of a new international institution. We will therefore call on politicians, experts, journalists, scholars, representatives of think tanks and non-governmental bodies as well as any public figures throughout the region to further our initiative.
