KOREA MONITOR
Date: 25 August 2025
We are pleased to present “Korean Unification from a European Perspective: Lessons from Poland and Europe Supporting Korea in Its Path Towards Unification”, a Special Report prepared within the #KoreaMonitor project. Read the full text below
The report offers a comprehensive outlook on the prospects of Korean unification, drawing from Poland’s historical experience and Europe’s path toward integration and peace.
As part of the Korea Monitor project, Warsaw Institute – together with dozens of experts, researchers, and journalists from Europe and the Republic of Korea – engaged in discussions, analysis, and knowledge exchange to highlight the lessons Europe can share. By presenting best practices and accumulated experience, the report explores potential processes that could support the Korean people on their way toward unification.
The publication includes contributions from leading scholars and experts, among them:
- Professor Grażyna Strnad – The Kwangju and Poznań Uprisings: Struggles for Freedom and Democracy
- Sylwia Szyc, Ph.D. – Lessons from Systemic Transformation in Poland: Implications for Korean Reunification
- Karol Starowicz – The Decommunization of Public Space as a Process of Shaping Collective Memory: The Example of the Polish State in the Context of the Potential Unification of the Korean States
- Monika K. Kwiatkowska – United in Division: Lessons from German Unification for Korea
- Han-Ul Chang – A European Model of Institutionalization in the Process of Korea Unification
We extend our gratitude to the UniKorea Foundation for making this project possible and to all those who contributed their expertise and insights. We hope this Special Report will inspire further dialogue and cooperation – because supporting Korea’s path to unification also means contributing to peace and prosperity in both Europe and Asia
.
The project is funded by a UniKorea grant, financed by the UniKorea Foundation
