What does the new German Chancellor mean for Poland?

On October 5, 2021, Liliana Śmiech, Director of the Analysis in the Warsaw Institute met with the Polish Ambassador to Germany, Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Przyłębski. The conversation concerned the aftermath of this year’s elections in Germany.

At the beginning of the conversation, Liliana Laughter asked the Ambassador about the factors that influenced the election result. Ambassador Andrzej Przyłębski replied that the final of the elections was not sure until the end, as illustrated in the exit-poll. Probably the key element in the declassification of the CDU / CSU in retrospect is the questionable PR action in the fight against this year’s July flood in Western Germany. Additionally, it is worth noting the fluctuating public mood in the context of the state’s fight against the pandemic. However, as the guest of the Warsaw Institute stated, the results of the winning party – SPD – and CDU / CSU were so close that if the voting date was changed to two weeks ahead, the result could be completely different.

Ambassador Przyłębski was also asked about a likely coalition. In his opinion, the composition of the government will be formed by the SPD, FDP and the Greens. The biggest problem for Polish-German relations and Polish energy ambitions is the anti-nuclear agenda of the Greens. This party may put pressure on the coalition to completely block the nuclear power in the European Union.
